How Old Is My Dog in Human Years?
The old "multiply by 7" rule for dog ages is an oversimplification. Research shows that dogs age much faster in their early years and more slowly in later years — and large breeds age faster than small breeds.
Why Size Matters
Small breeds typically live 14-16 years while giant breeds often live only 8-10 years. This means a 5-year-old Great Dane is much "older" in biological terms than a 5-year-old Chihuahua.
The Latest Research
A 2020 UC San Diego study using DNA methylation found a more accurate formula: dog age in human years = 16 x ln(dog age) + 31. Our calculator uses breed-size adjusted tables based on the latest canine longevity research.
Age equivalents are approximate and vary by individual dog health and genetics.
